Gerd Arntz

Gerd Arntz (1900-1988) was a German artist with a political activist focus. Many of his infographics, as well as his Isotype project to create a universal set of icons for signs, are available at www.gerdarntz.org. This infographic poster shows the New York City population explosion from 25,000 in 1767 to 9.5 million in 1930.

WarCraft III DotA Poster

Created by Alwyn B., this hierarchical tree shows the complex Hero Item recipes for the WarCraft III MOD "Defense of the Ancients". As a fan and a player of the game, Alwyn painstakingly created his own infographic and then posted in on the Internet to share with other players. This makes a fantastic poster!

More than just the item combinations, the poster shows:

  • Shows the basic items and how to combine them to form better items.
  • Shows where to buy them, and for how much.
  • Mini Map that shows shop locations
  • Shop Item Layouts
When I looked today, this chart had been viewed over 100,000 times. Great job Alwyn, and thanks for sharing.

Greenwashing

From Futerra Communications:

Our Greenwash Guide (PDF) was born out of a desire to help communications professionals get their green messaging right. The majority of Greenwash is the result of over-eager communications campaigns that lack environmental rigour rather than malicious intent.

Outdoor Pictogram Headlines

Neat experiment by Dave Bowker over at Designing The News. The idea is to use pictgraphics to visualize news headlines in public places. Specifically in Europe, you could establish a universal set of icons over time that people who speak different languages could interpret and understand.

Who Owns the Car Companies? (UPDATE)

TooManyCars.com has updated their family tree style poster of how all of the car companies are related. The latest updates were as of 4/1/08. They have also changed to better software used to zoom into the poster. Each of rectangles you see on the images will zoom in close so you can read the details about the connections.

They've really done a good job tracking down the specific types of relationships and the ownership portions between the companies. High-res PNG or PDF files are also available.

On The Map

Found on notcot.com, On The Map is a cool project by Stefanie Posavec that maps the rhythm and flow of literary works into some stunning visual posters. Breaking a story down into chapters, paragraphs, sentences and finally individual words. Then color coded to capture the topics as they reappear throughout the story. The level of detail is really impressive. Click the images to see the high-resolution images from notcot.com.

Thanks Jonathon and Jason for sending the link.

Stefanie also created a number of additional visualizations of the same story.

The Calculators of HP poster

From the The Hewlett Packard Calculator Page.

This poster shows every HP calculator made starting with the famous HP-35. Each calculator is displayed with it's production start and end data, and it's project codename.
It's amazing how many of these I have actually used. This is similar to the Evolution of Apple Design...but with more buttons.

Lance's Last Tour

I found two good newspaper infographics from 2005 covering Lance Armstrong's last Tour de France on newsdesigner.com where you can get larger PDF files that make good posters. Both are two-page graphics (doubletrucks). The first is from The Oregonian (above), and the second is from the St. Pete Times (below).
